Lifestyle Counseling

Lifestyle choices affect our wellness in the short-term and long-term. Lifestyle choices are the largest contributing factors to all chronic diseases, which means that chronic disease is largely preventable. Imagine feeling better, having more energy, and slowing the aging process just through changes to your daily routine.

I believe that wellness is the result of balance in all aspects of our lives..

Dr. Anderson will work with you to determine which changes in your daily routine will help you to improve your health and well-being, as well as help prevent the development of disease. Dr. Anderson will help you to break down any lifestyle changes into small and manageable steps to increase your chance of success.

Nutrition

You are what you eat, and a healthy and balanced diet is an essential component of a healthy and balanced life. The food you eat provides the nutrients that fuel every process and biochemical reaction in your body. Giving your body the raw materials it needs to operate optimally will make a tremendous difference in the way you feel physically and emotionally. Dr. Anderson’s approach to nutrition is based on a whole foods diet. A whole food is one you can look at on your plate and imagine it growing on a farm or in nature in its whole form. Can you imagine chocolate chip cookies or a milkshake growing on a tree? You probably can if you’re creative! Dr. Anderson’s approach to nutrition means eating real food most of the time and making smart choices when it comes to occasional sweets and convenience foods. Don’t worry, any changes you decide to make to your diet – because, after all, the choice is yours – will be made in gradual and easily-digested pieces (pun-intended). It’s amazing how many small but smart substitutions can be made when you know what to look for in your food.

If you have a chronic health problem, there are strategies to approach improving your health through your dietary choices. For example, eating blueberries daily is known to support the health of blood vessels and is very beneficial to people with health problems such as varicose veins, diabetes, and heart disease.
Nutritional supplements may also be recommended, and Dr. Anderson carries high quality supplements available only to health care practitioners in her office.

Biotherapeutic Drainage

Biotherapeutic drainage is a technique developed and used in Europe over the past 100 years and is the approach used initially with most clients in Dr. Anderson’s practice. It is an approach to healing which involves optimizing the function of the organs responsible for eliminating toxins from the body (such as the liver, kidneys, intestines, lungs, and skin) through the use of low potency homeopathic medicines. This helps the body to eliminate toxins from the environment and from the body’s own metabolic processes more effectively. The accumulation of toxic material in the body is considered to be a contributing cause of many symptoms and chronic diseases.

The often-used metaphor for drainage is that of repainting a home. Before painting, if you want to do a good quality job, it is necessary to wash and repair the walls. If you paint before cleaning and fixing the existing damage, the finished job will be of low quality and it will need to be redone soon. Likewise, if you add supplements or medications to a body that has accumulated toxins and is sluggish in eliminating them, the health gains that may be made from taking the supplements or medications will not last.

Homeopathy

Homeopathy is a system of medicine which was developed by a German physician named Samuel Hahnemann approximately 200 years ago. It is a safe, effective, and powerful healing technique that brings balance to the body, mind, and spirit. Homeopathic “remedies” as they are called, stimulate an individual’s inherent healing energy and ability. The practice of homeopathy is truly an art form, as the practitioner must determine the correct remedy for the individual out of about 2000 homeopathic medicines currently in use, as such, it is a highly specific, individualized way to approach healing. Homeopathic remedies are made from mineral, plant, or animal substances and are available in different “potencies” or strengths. The lower strength remedies are available over the counter, but the higher strength remedies are available only to health care practitioners.

If Dr. Anderson feels that you are a good candidate for homeopathy, you may be asked for information that may seem irrelevant to you. You will be encouraged to speak about all areas of your life from food cravings to what you dream about to how you react to conflict in your relationships.

Botanical Medicine

Botanical medicine is the use of herbs to ease discomfort of symptoms and to correct the underlying cause of the symptoms. The use of many plant medicines has been validated scientifically, and the use of many more has been validated through centuries of traditional use. Botanical medicines are better tolerated by most people than some medications and may be more effective in some cases. However, not all botanical medicines are safe for all people. They may interact with medications and with each other. There is also great variability in the quality of herbal supplements available. In order for botanical medicine to be of value to you, you must take herbs that are safe for you in the form of high quality supplements at the right dose for you. The best way to determine all of these factors is to work with a naturopathic doctor, someone who is an expert in the safe use of botanical medicines.

Dr. Anderson carries only the highest quality botanical medicines in her office.

Hydrotherapy

Hydrotherapy is the use of water to relieve symptoms and improve health. Examples include, hot water baths to increase circulation and immune function, cold compresses to decrease swelling and inflammation, and alternating hot and cold compresses to increase circulation and speed healing of injured tissue. There are many types of hydrotherapy, some that are used in a clinical setting, and some that can be done at home. Dr. Anderson does not currently use hydrotherapy in her office, but may recommend home hydrotherapy for some clients. Lifestyle choices affect our wellness in the short-term and long-term.
